Armenia: 3 Medals and Counting

(A.W.)—As of Aug. 12, Armenian athletes have secured three bronze medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. 2008 European champion Tigran Gevorg Martirosian, 20, won the Weightlifting bronze in the men’s 62-69 kg. category, while 2006 European champion Roman Amoian, 24, secured the Greco-Roman Wrestling bronze in the men’s under-55 kg. category. 2007 European champion Gevorg Davtian, 25, secured a third bronze medal in weightlifting.

In an article titled “Speaking of India, Armenia and those Herculean Australians,” which appeared in the Aug. 12 issue of the Los Angeles Times (before Armenia had won the third medal), Chuck Culpepper noted that Armenia had two medals among merely 2,968,586 citizens, or one for every 1,484,293 Armenians, making it the country with the most medals per capita.

See pages 8-9 for more details on the Armenian Olympians.
